| The
RMA (Route Master Airport) was
designed as an airport bus with
doors at the front. Features including
deep seat cushions, fluorescent
lighting, better suspension, luggage
racks and a high speed set up
were as standard. A small number
of these were built in 1966/7.
The RMA’s provided a
service between the London book-in
terminal and Heathrow Airport
aswell as occasionally providing
other special ‘transfers’.
Most also carried luggage trailers
attached to the rear.
After years of sterling service,
many became redundant in the
mid 1970’s and were sold
on to London Transport (LT).
LT decided to use a number of
these on one of its local bus
routes in the Romford area with
other RMA’s becoming staff
shuttle buses or driver training
vehicles. In 1987, this bus
was one of a small batch bought
by an operator in Scotland for
local bus services there. In
2002, it migrated to Mac Tours
in Scotland for use as a tour
bus. It was acquired by us in
2009.
This vehicle has been well
looked after and is very smart
indeed. It was also retrofitted
with one of the latest low emission
engines a few years ago. As
this bus has doors at the front
and no open platform, it can
be one person operated.
An unusual type of Routemaster
bus for an event which requires
something a little different.
